Jalan Tan Hiok Nee(陈旭年街)aka 文化街 / IT Roo Cafe / Roost Juice+Bar

Jalan Tan Hiok Nee is a small street located at the city centre of Johor Bahru. It has been made a cultural street two years ago in order to preserve the culture of the Chinese community there, as part of the Iskandar Project. Jalan Tan Hiok Nee has been existing for a real long and i used to pass by this street on my way to school but i was not really interested in finding out more about the place over the years. this place came into mind when leewang and i ran out of place to go on Saturday -_- heard that there are quite a number of thematic cafes located hence we specially made a trip down to discover the beauty of this cultural street.

a Google map is provided for you to locate Jalan Tan Hiok Nee.

YOU ARE WELCOME.

1/
the map for various tourist attractions

2/
this is not Jalan Tan Hiok Nee but a street nearby.

i loved the colorful wall!

3/
having lunch at a cafe which claims to have the best chicken chop in town

4/
why did i look so moody -_- in fact my mood was pretty good!

5/
IT ROO cafe and the menu

6/
complimentary peanuts treat. ultra crunchy!!

munching peanuts + chatting nonsense with friends while waiting for the foods to be served effectively shortened the perceived waiting time!!!!

so these peanuts have been successfully used to make you feel that they serve food fast.

7/
did i mention that outdoor seats are available?

8/
the menu fyi.

9/
menu for beverages.

10/
grilled chicken chop RM12

they serve homemade wedges rather than the usual french fries. wedges were not the crispy-outside-mashy-inside kind but they were pretty good though.

i preferred a more tender kind of chicken chop but this was acceptable.

11/
fried chicken chop RM12

i liked the crispy outer shell of this fried chicken. the batter produced rather different kind of crispiness over other chicken chop. no words can describe the difference so please try it out to get what i am talking about -_-

12/
the soft and mashy wedges

13/
even the ladybug wanted to share our meal lol

14/

showing you where IT ROO is.

you're welcome.

fyi 80000 is the very first postal code in Johor Bahru.

15/

16/
after IT ROO we went to this retro cafe named ROOST.

17/
business hour fyi.

18/
menu

19/

the table lined with rulers which we used during childhood time

NOSTALGIC NOT????!!!!!!

20/
some interior shots

 21/
some retro stuff

22/
good actor.

23/
another thing i liked about this cafe apart from all the retro deco.

they use this ultra cute mini pail that we bring to beach for building sand castle!!!!!!!!!!! besides green they have it in yellow/pink too

so tempted to bring it home -_-

ohh the drink was banana queen if i remembered correctly. pretty nice though ;)

24/
CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!

you're welcome to think that the caption was dedicated to the human being shown in the picture.

(pls pardon my messy hair -_-)

25/
one pathetic fact about good photographer: they take nice pictures of landscape or portrait or any other thing but not they themselves.

too bad leewang is not a good photographer or i would be happy to have tons of photo of myself :(

26/
the corner where we sat.

27/
even a table lamp was so cute

28/
another table top.

29/
you have various options of table/chairs, be it modern or retro style.

30/
changed seat but not forgetting my cutie pail lolol

i guess my dad/mom would be familiar with that tv and its console -_-

31/
pretending to be not paying attention lol

32/
JB Arts Festival was held around that area during the time we went there.

33/
even the Rubik's cubes can be a nice deco.

34/
it used to be shop selling all sorts of vintage/retro stuff in my first visit :(

we happened to be there like half an hour before their afternoon break hence there was no other customers around. i was glad that no one was there or i would not have taken so many pictures :D

35/

36/
the tiny staircase where walking side-by-side is almost impossible

opps forgot to mentioned all the pictures above were taken upstairs!

37/
mini retro music player by the cashier

38/
i liked this shop too! it's just next door to Roost and there is actually a link way from the second floor.

The Girl Next Door had closed for afternoon break when we left Roost hence did not get to go in. :( they sell handmade clothes and do haircut too! not sure if they still have the salon services.

39/
street view of Jalan Tan Hiok Nee.

Days ogo only did i realize there is this really famous shop selling nice banana cake!! it's the second or third shop in this picture if i'm not wrong. i bought and it was pretty nice…………on the day i bought it  'cause the cake became rather moist. :(

40/
walked down the street and came across lion dance member practicing for performance later.

45/
end of the street.

46/

47/
even the dusbin was nicer -_-

48/
eh wrong sequence of photo -_- but i'm lazy to change the numbering so just be it.
it's located at the junction between Jalan Dhoby and Jalan Pahang:

80000 Johor Bahru.
Tel: 07-2227780
Operating hour: 12pm - 12am

49/
a malay bakery shop selling freshly baked bread.

 50/
